Instead of writing about the typical negative light many people, teams, or organizations using get talked about, I want to talk about some good PR things a team can do.
The Denver Broncos took a vine of Peyton Manning, throwing the football with some young kids. According to the article posted on the Bleacher Report, Peyton taught his moves to the youngsters.
The team Twitter, tweeted a picture of the event, which helps the fans see that the team is giving back to the community. Many people like hearing happy things. They get tired of hear the same old negative stories about athletes doing stupid things, so hear a story like this, it makes people happy.
By tweeting and vining the event they are promoting the good. Every body needs some good PR and this was a good thing to blast to the public.

Bills Pay for Breaking Promise to Fans
The Buffalo Bills are now paying out up to 3 million dollars to settle with fans for sending out more that the promised 5 texts a months.
The Bills promised fans that opted into the text club that they would not receive more than 5 texts a months, but according to the Bleacher Report article say Bills broke this promise and sent out more than that.
I find this to be an interesting problem. I think it is sad that the Bills let it get the courts before reaching a settlement. Personally, after working at store we we value customers, we would never break this promise. As a matter of fact, we made a promise to our customers no more than 5 texts a months and thats what we do.
I would think that business like the Bills would be able to count to five. Also I would have thought they could have solved the problem before it reached the courts. The fans were clearly upset, so why wait to see what the courts have to say.
Something we learned about in class was getting ahead of the problem. The Bills clearly thought they could have found a loophole or something to get out of settling, but I feel like they may have lost some loyal fans by doing something like this.

Matt Harvey Deletes Twitter Account
New York Mets Player, Matt Harvey, actions have lead to him deleting his Twitter account.
He posted a picture of him self flipping off the camera before entering surgery. According to an article on the Bleacher Report, Harvey says his mother took the photo before surgery. The article says he tweeted the picture so say happy 6 months.
This makes a PR nightmare for the Mets, MLB, and Matt Harvey. He PR agent had to come with a plan to solve the negative feedback of upset fans. Their solution, or maybe his own, was to delete his Twitter. From what I could find, there was no public apology for the tweet that offended fans.
Personally, if that is they he choses to represent himself, he should have stood by the post or simply deleted the post. By deleting his entire account, it seems strange. I'm not sure if there were other issues that Harvey has had with social media that cause him and is PR rep to come to the conclusion to delete his Twitter account. Regardless, this was the end result.
I feel like there were other solution, and even still, somethings that can still be done. If the issue is as large as the Bleacher Report say, the player could hold a press conference where he explains his actions and apologies for offending fans.

Jackie Robinson Day
Video from Youtube
I thought this is a good thing for several reasons. First, I thought it was interesting that they were making it public that the team would be wearing the number 42 on the their jerseys. They plastered it all over social media. The team could have just wore the number and let the press make a passive note, but they didn't. They instead made an honest effort make sure they had a message that would be received by the audience.
The second thing to note is that the team was making en effort to connect with a certain demographic. According to this article by the Bleacher Report, there were interesting thoughts from African Americans currently in the league. The article interviews several MLB player for the Phillies and the Braves.
Overall, I think this was a good campaign from the Phillies to promote and honor a legendary figure in the MLB.

The Irsay Controversy
Many people in the sports world know about the recent arrest of Jim Irsay. Police charged him with intoxicated driving according to this ESPN article. The article also says he had 29 thousand dollars in the car as well.
The more interesting thing to think about with this case is how will the NFL handle the Colts Owner. wWill they force him to sell out or what? This is the lingering question on not just Colts fans and members, but the entire NFL community.
Recently, the NFL has been taking a hard stance on the image the player are putting out to the public. The NFL is holding the players to a higher standard, so will the same be true of the owners?
Personally, it only seems reasonable to have the owners follow the same standards and rules as the players since the owners are also a representation of the team. But on the other hand, they own the team. Also I would guess that owning the team can't mean much since they are only the owners of the team and can not have a league of their own.
I think the NFL should hold the owners to a higher standard than the players, because in many cases the oweners are the face of the team, and with a bad face it reflects poorly on the team.

Sports and Entertainment Volunteer in the Field
For the Sports Promotion and Publicity class at Queens University, we were all required to volunteer for ten hours a week. I chose to volunteer with the Queens University Athletic department. I completed my hours on February 26 and March 14, 2014. I was able to complete all ten hours during this time. My responsibilities were the following:
-Help with half time promotions
-Help set up for games
-handout programs
-help with student check in at games
-clean up after games
-offer ideas on ways to improve attendance at games
Some of my goals and objectives were to see what goes into promoting a good game day experience so people want to come back again. I was able to learn that set up is crucial to making sure the fan experience is good. No fan wants to arrive at a game to see that the bleachers aren't pulled out, or that there is no music playing.
Another objective was to observer the use of social media to promote the game. My advisor was very admit that the game has to be live tweeted so fans not in attendance know what is going on.
I was able to complete all of the responsibilities listed above and they were all essential to making a game experience fun, safe, and wanting more.
With relation to class, I learned was able to see the precautions that an athletic department takes to ensure there are no unnecessary risks. Also they try to make a presence online which was discussed in class. The presence they try to keep is something they are constantly updating. Also they have a brand of "Our House" that they are constantly telling the fans to use on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. I learned through this experience that I do not want to be in the field of PR, but I am respectful of all the hard work they do to make sure their image is kept.
A problem I encountered was, this seem like a lot of work for a few people. They have an efficient system, but it is still a lot going on at once. They have to make sure all the game schedule stuff is taken care of, as well as making sure to beat people to the gate. Also, it seemed like there was not enough publicity to students. They do not have a large budget from what I understood, so they really utilize social media since is it free. There did not seem to be many external agencies that impacted our games, but weather was an issue they they dealt with in the past. People involved, are other students that are in a club called Sports Marketing Association (SMA) and some other staff members that are in charge of thing like the facilities and athlete's.
Some things that I really enjoyed, were that there is a lot of opportunity in this field to make a program as great as you want. Also, enjoyed learning so much about goes on to make the game day experience what it is. This experience gives a well rounded experience about what all goes into the promotions and publicity of the game.
Since I am going to be a producer at an affiliate news station, I will be able to see what all is going through the mind of a sports person writing a press release. I will also understand how hard they work to get things in great shape for the game, and how happy they are when the media does show up to cover their game.
For academic preparation, I was able to see the the advisor create a press release and get sponsors names out. This is important because as we discussed in class, this is how many sports programs are able to survive.
